Liz McKenna
Marital Status:
My girlfriend and I would be married if it was legal. We've been living together in Maryland since 2002.
Children?
None. But we have three German Shepherds (Dakota, Cyclone, and Daybreak), an African Gray parrot (Gabe) and a cat (Fredo)
Grandchildren?
See above.
Education:
Went to Fordham in 1976. Then St. Peter's for a trimester, Then Fairleigh Dickinson. Then Pace and then I dropped out.
Occupation:
Right now I'm a pampered queer housewife, but for most of my post-college life I was a copyeditor, editor, writer, with some dot-com-boom web design. I have been an editor at Penthouse Forum (the little magazine with the sex letters, yes.), at High Times (420 dudes), and a short-lived rock-n-roll magazine called Nerve.
Volunteer and Professional Activities:
are admirable endeavors. My girlfriend is a security geek.
Current hobbies and interests:
Right now we're spending most of our time on renovating our home. I liek teh internets (sic) and I keep a Live Journal which I update fairly regularly. Come visit and drop me a comment!
I still love movies and TV and media in general. I like to cook. I like training my doggies
What percentage of your hair is visibly gray (is this a trick question?)
About 30% of it is visibly gray as far as I can tell when I miss an appointment with my colorist. Otherwise it's red with blonde highlights and brunette lowlights.
If you had one year free of all responsibility and unlimited funds, what would you do?
Holy crap, maybe I'd have enough time to fill out this survey.
What are the most rewarding things that you have done in your life?
Being out as a lesbian and queer since the late seventies. Being a good friend.
What rewarding things do you plan to do in your life?
I'm thinking about going back to school, getting whatever degrees I need and becoming a Queer Studies teacher because I feel like I have a lot of insight and experience to contribute.
I also take it kind of seriously that I'm living this upper-middle class suburban housewife life and I'm out and I'm myself.
What are your favorite non-family related things to do in your free time?
Shopping! Comic books! Video games! Movies!
How would you best describe your idea of "being successful?"
Being able to look back over your life and feel like you've been a good role model and learned from your mistakes. Knowing who you are. Knowing what makes you happy and knowing how to get it.
What are your most vivid memories of your days in Ridgewood?
English with Mr. Postel. Weird things - I think I was battling depression as high school wore on and my most vivid memories are of mood swings. Completely TRAGIC crushes. Unrequited love. The terrible angst of being born too soon to self-identify as teen goth. OH AND THE COMPUTER DATING DANCE.
What achievement or activity are you most proud of in your life?
See answer to the rewarding question. Also (hopefully) finishing this survey.
What single piece of wisdom would you like to leave for the next generation?
SUNBLOCK.
How have you changed since high school?
I'm out, I have sex, I have a good haircut, I actually like to work out. I read up on the newest face-lift techniques. Oh and I'm not depressed or anxious thanks to the miracles of modern chemistry.
What else should we know about you?!
